We hope this newsletter finds you enjoying this beautiful winter! The days are getting noticeably longer, but there's still plenty of time to cozy up in these dark late afternoons with a good book. I tend to think of March as a slow time of year, but not at the Harbor Springs Library! On the first Saturday of each month, we have Children's Story Time and Crafts, which this month will be on the 5th. Each Thursday morning at 10:30 we also have a Lap Sit Story Time for our youngest readers. Tuesdays after school we have our Elementary Reading Club, where elementary-aged students come hang out and listen to chapter books. There is no need to sign up or commit to any of our continuous programming, just show up when you can!On Saturday the 12th at 10:30am, Cross Village resident Rand Shackleton will be reading from the picture book "Trapped by the Ice: Shackleton's Amazing Antarctic Adventure" and talking to children about Sir Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated 1914 expedition. The following Saturday, the 19th, we have a new program here at the library called "Tail Waggin' Tutors!" If you know of any children that struggle reading aloud, this would be a great way to practice. Studies have shown that reading to dogs in a relaxed setting can boost reading skills and self confidence. We have a volunteer coming in with a certified therapy dog named Rosie and we're creating a schedule: each child will get a 15 minute one-on-one session between 10:30am and noon. Please call to pre-register as space is limited. There will be another session in April. We also have a presentation on March 16th about Wolves in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Educator Micheal Cromley will be at the library to talk about wolves' establishment here and what that means for humans. He'll also talk about identification techniques. There will be a Question and Answer period afterward. All of these events at the Harbor Springs are free and open to the public. We hope to see you and your family in here soon!
