Hi ,The clocks have sprung forward and so apparently has the season! The snow has all but disappeared around here and we're keeping busy at the library.Over the weekend, the kids listened to local resident Rand Shackleton as he regaled them with the harrowing saga of his distant cousin, Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led his fearless crew on an ill-fated expedition to Antarctica 100 years ago. It was a stunning tale of survival and the entire room was captivated. We look forward to having Rand back on April 28th at 7pm to give another Shackleton presentation this time geared toward adults. He'll be screening a documentary and answering questions. Trust us, it's a fascinating story you don't want to miss!At 7pm this Wednesday, March 16th, educator Micheal Cromley will give a talk on wolves in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. It will be an educational presentation, focusing on identification and history. He'll show a video and end with questions and answers. This Saturday, March 19th, we're having our first round of "Tail Waggin' Tutors!" In this program, children come to the library to practice their reading-aloud skills with a therapy dog. Studies have shown that children's confidence and reading skills grow in a relaxed, supportive environment. Dogs don't judge, don't laugh, and don't correct children when they stumble. They simply provide a non-threatening, positive audience for young readers. Children are given 15 minute slots to read their book of choice to the dog in the library. This month's schedule filled up quickly, so we'll be doing it again next month on Saturday, April 23rd between 10:30 and noon. Call the library to put your child on the schedule. We will not be having Story Time on April 2nd due to spring break, but will resume the first Saturday of May. Each Tuesday after school we have Elementary Reading Club, a program for elementary-aged kids to come have fun and listen to chapter books at the library. Each Thursday morning at 10:30, we have a toddler story time. There is also an Open Mic on the first and third Mondays of each month at 6:30pm.As always, the Harbor Springs Library is open to the public and offers free Wi-Fi, the use of laptop computers, and of course a plethora of reading material. We look forward to seeing you soon at any of these free events!Amelie Trufant DawsonDirector
