The Harbor Springs Library Digital Collection on Libby by OverDrive

Libby app Rotating Ad

Libby is a new app from OverDrive that makes borrowing and reading digital books from our Up North Digital Collection library consortium easier for patrons. The app is available for free from the App Store, Google Play, and Microsoft.

The Harbor Springs Library offers free and instant access to over 28,000 eBooks and audiobooks through Libby with your library card.

Benefits of using Libby

All ebooks and audiobooks are free to borrow.
You can read or listen to your Libby books in the app on your tablet or phone, or on your Kindle.
You can adjust the Reading Settings to change the text size, font, and lighting.
You can use the app with multiple library cards and multiple library systems.

How to borrow eBooks and audiobooks from Libby

1. Find your patron number on the back of your library card or ask at the circulation desk (this is the same number you use for MeLCat and to sign in to your account on our website). Verify the phone number we have on file for you.
2. Download the free Libby app from the app store on your device and open the app.
3. Tap Hi, then scroll down to Find My Library.
4. Select Harbor Springs Library (Up North Michigan Consortium)
5. You will be asked if you have a library card. Select Yes.
6. Select Harbor Springs Library from the scrolling list and sign in with your patron number as your USER NAME. Your password will be the phone number we have on file for you.

Books may be downloaded to your device for two weeks after which they will automatically be returned from your shelf. You may check out up to 5 books and place up to 5 holds at one time per card. For more information, call us at 526-2531 or visit www.help.libbyapp.com!

Tips:

There are 5 icons at the bottom of the Libby screen: a magnifying glass, a library, the Libby icon, a stack of books, and a clock. Use the magnifying glass to search for a specific book. Use the library to browse through various collections. Use the Libby icon to view your library account info and settings, add a new library card, or get help. Use the stack of books to see your current loans/holds shelf. Use the clock to view your history of downloads.

In library, you have the option to set your preferences. Here you can choose if you prefer audiobooks or ebooks or both, language, audience, whether you use a Kindle or simply the app to read, and whether you want a book available now or everything if it’s OK to place a reserve for a future read. When you apply preferences, this will save for all your searches. You can also choose to refine your search with the same questions for just that particular search. Both preferences and refine can be changed at any time.

Tap a title to see or listen to a sample, view the summary and reviews, and title information.

When you find a book you’d like to borrow, tap Borrow and you’ll be able to find it in your Shelf.

If a book is currently unavailable, you can tap Place a Hold to be put on a waitlist. The first time you do this you’ll be asked for your email address. After that, when a book you’ve reserved becomes available you will get a notification. You have 3 days from the time you get the hold notification to borrow the book to your device before it disappears.

From your Shelf page, you can tap Open Book to begin reading, renew a book under Manage Loan, view your due date, and track your reading.

If you read on a Kindle, you can set that preference in the library page. You will need to connect your Libby account to your Amazon account in order to send the free Libby download to your Kindle.

You only need a current network connection to download the book. Once it’s downloaded, you can go “off grid” and still access the book on your device. Books are downloaded for 14 days and then they will disappear from your device. If you finish the book early or decide not to read it, please choose return early from your shelf page so that other readers may access it.

We're excited to offer this service to the patrons of the Harbor Springs Library and thank all of our donors for making this possible.

The library offers Libby by OverDrive training sessions every Tuesday from 2-3pm. Drop in to learn how to use the features of this free app!
